Kubwa Market razed down by fire
5 killed in Abuja market explosion
No fewer than five persons have been feared killed following an explosion which occurred on Friday evening in the Kubwa ultra modern market in Abuja.
Emergency services personnel at the scene said at least two others sustained various degrees of injuries from the explosion.
While the actual cause of the fire which started minutes before 8pm could not be immediately ascertained, some traders in market said it was as a result of explosion from adulterated kerosene.
Sources said that the explosion led to a fire outbreak at a shop near the main market and that the incident caused pandemonium within the area as people ran helter skelter for their safety.
A woman who was seen at the scene of the incident said that her husband had just driven through the road linking the market minutes before the explosion occurred, adding, “it was God that saved my husband, my midnight prayers are paying off oh.”
At the time of filing this report, there was no immediate official confirmation of the disaster from the police and officials of the FCT fire service to confirm the incident, the casualties and the cause of the fire as all efforts to do so proved abortive.
Periscope International reports that market fire incidents are common place in Nigeria, and the occurrences increase especially during the winter season.
