5 Nigerian journalists nominated for People Journalism Prize Awards
Five Nigerian journalists have been nominated among ten nominees for the Gatefield 2021 People Journalism Prize for Africa (PJPA) award.
The organizers of the awards, Gatefield, a Sub-Sahara Africa public strategy and media group, disclosed this in a statement signed and issued on Monday in Abuja by the project manager, Mrs Safiya-Pereira Ibrahim.
According to Ibrahim, the journalists nominated had advanced society through their journalism and acts of journalistic courage and plans have been concluded for the awards ceremony.
She explained that the 2021 PJPA had reached out to dozens of journalists, human rights
defenders, and public opinion shapers across the continent and received nominations for several
impressive journalists.
Those nominated for the prize are Daneel Knoetze/View Finder (South Africa), Laila-Johnson Salami (Nigeria), Naipanoi Lepapa (Kenya), Samuel Ogundipe (Nigeria) and Manasseh-Azure Awuni (Ghana).
Other nominees include Jamil Mabai (Nigeria), Lucy Kassa (Ethiopia), Elizabeth Merab (Kenya), Sandra Ezekwesili (Nigeria) and Irene David-Arinze (Nigeria).
The project manager said that the winners in the two journalism and social justice newsmaker categories will be announced later.
According to her, each category winner will receive $1,500 in cash, totalling $3,000 in financial rewards to the winning journalists.
She added that more information would be disclosed regarding the public award ceremony in subsequent communications.
Ibrahim further explained that Gatefield is a media group that influences positive change while PJPA is the organisation leading corporate social responsibility commitment to advance democratic freedoms and societal change.
She added that Gatefield’s PJPA is a public service journalism initiative to recognize and reward journalists, citizen reporters, and social justice newsmakers on the continent.
