AU condemns Burkina Faso coup, demands President Kaboré’s reinstatement
The African Union (AU), on Tuesday condemned Sunday’s coup d’etat in Burkina Faso which culminated in the overthrew of President Roch Kaboré’s government on Monday.
A statement issued on Tuesday by the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Mahamat, said the African body called on the army and security forces to reinstate President Kabore.
It also urged them “to ensure the physical integrity of President Kabore and his government.”
The AU Commission also called on the nation’s military to strictly adhere to their republican vocation, that is, the defense of the internal and external security of the country.
Periscope International recalls that mutinous soldiers in Burkina Faso had staged the coup after revolting against the government alleging inability to contain jihadists invasion and killings, corruption and its inability to curb high cost of living.
The soldiers also arrested and detained Kabore and top ranking members of his cabinet.
