The Department of State Services (DSS) is investigating the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, over alleged terrorism fraud and financing.

Sources said that the DSS has stepped up investigations into multiple allegations against the apex bank boss with a view to arresting and arresting him upon the completion of investigations.

According to a recent report by Premium Times, there were indicting details from court documents on the controversy around the trail for Emefiele, among them funding   “unknown gunmen” and members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Emefiele’s alleged crime include sabotaging President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, financing terrorism, aiding and abetting terrorism, and committing other economic crimes with the effect of undermining Nigeria’s national security.

The CBN governor is also alleged to have mismanaged the CBN subsidiary, NIRSAL, and the central bank’s Anchor Borrowers Programme.

According to the DSS, Emefiele funded IPOB/ESN with both the resources he raised for his failed presidential bid last year and funds diverted from government coffers.

Emefiele is further alleged to have committed fraud, money laundering, round tripping and conferment of financial benefit to self and others.

The CBN Governor also mismanaged various interventionist funds of the government under his control, the secret police further alleged.

“Investigation is still ongoing on a wider scale as other members of the syndicate chain need to be identified and arrested to enable successful prosecution,” part of the DSS investigation report said.

Periscope International recalls that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had earlier spearheaded the move to arrest Emefiele following pressure from the ‘cabal in the presidency’.

The EFCC was however said to have refrained from the move after selling the controversial currency re-design dummy to the embattled CBN Governor.
