Cameroon win AFCON bronze after beating Burkina Faso on penalties
Cameroon, hosts of the rescheduled 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Saturday night won the bronze medal after coming from behind to beat Burkina Faso in the third-place match.
Burkina Faso had opened the scoring on 24 minutes through Steve Yago’s poked finish, added a second before half time through Andre Onana’s own goal before Djibril Ouattara’s header in the early second half gave them a three nil lead.
However, Cameroon came from 3-0 down to level at 3-3 against Burkina Faso in regulation time, forcing the game into penalty shootout.
The Indomitable Lions then went on to win the bronze medal after beating Burkina Faso 5-3 on penalties.
Earlier, despite Burkina Faso’s 3-0 lead against the hosts, the home fans kept on cheering the Cameroonian team and they were rewarded with a 71st minute Stephane Bahoken goal.
Two quick braces by skipper Vincent Aboubakar in the last five minutes then drew them level before the game went straight to penalties without extra time.
In the penalty shootout, Burkina Faso’s Ibrahim Toure missed his kick in a disappointing end for Burkina Faso as the five-time winners responded in an incredible fashion by converting all five of their spot-kicks to clinch the bronze.
In the final match of the tournament scheduled for Sunday, last edition’s finalists, Senegal will slug it out with seven-time champions, Egypt for the gold trophy.
