An Area Court in Jos on Thursday granted the prayer of a woman seeking to divorce her husband of 22 years for abandoning her and their five children.

Periscope International reports that the petitioner, Nuratu Shehu, had filed for the dissolution of her marriage to her estranged husband, Abdulganiyu Olayekan, on grounds of abandonment.

She had accused her husband of abandoning her and their five children, refusal to pay their school fees, as well as refusal to pay rent  for three years, culminating in the family’s eviction from their rented apartment.

While delivering ruling in the case, Justices Ghazali Adam, leading Hyacenth Dolnaan, dissolved the marriage forthwith.

“All efforts to reconcile the parties have failed and, therefore, Shehu and Olayekan are hereby ordered to go their separate ways.

“The petitioner is granted custody of the last two children and  the respondent is ordered to send monthly allowance of N30,000 to the petitioner for their upkeep.

“A violation of any of the orders made by the court, would amount to contempt and shall be treated with the appropriate sanctions,” the court held.
