Court sentences man to 10 years imprisonment for sodomy
An FCT Upper Area Court in Zuba, Abuja, on Thursday, sentenced a 37-year-old trader, Nasiru Sadiq to ten years imprisonment for sodomizing a nine-year-old boy.
The convict had upon his arraignment pleaded guilty to the charge of unnatural offence preferred against him by the police.
He had also begged the court to forgive him and temper justice with mercy.
Delivering judgment, however, the Judge, Mohammed Sani, held that the convict was not a first offender and sentenced him to ten years in prison.
He also ordered the convict to pay N50,000 as fine to the court after serving his jail term or serve additional two years imprisonment in lieu of the fine.
Sani also refused to give him an option of fine, saying that the punishment would serve as a deterrence to others.
He warned the convict to be a good citizen after serving his jail term by being of good behaviour and desist from further committing crime.
The judge added that the punishment would have been stiffer if the convict had not saved the court the rigour of protracted prosecution.
Chinedu Ogada, the Prosecution Counsel, had earlier in his submission told the court that the convict was arrested by a community vigilante group in Zuba and brought to Zuba Police Station. at about 9pm on January 7.
Ogada said on the same date the 9-year-old boy reported the matter to the community vigilante group.
He told the court that during police investigation and interrogation the convict admitted to committing the offence.
According to him, the offence contravenes the provisions of Section 284 of the Penal Code.
