A South African Court has sentenced a man, Jerome Windvogel, to life imprisonment, after convicting him for the brutal murder of his ex-girlfriend.

Local reports said that the convict had on Feb. 17, 2023, stabbed his lover, Nelnisha Kortjie, 39 times “for failing to respond to his text messages.”

According to the reports, the deceased’s mother and sister testified that Windvogel was laughing while he was stabbing Kortjie 39 times.

The Worcester Regional Court in Western Cape, while delivering judgement, noted that Windvogel was merciless, convicted and sentenced him to jail for life.

The court held that the convict gave no regard for the child he shares with Kortjie and her two other children who are not his own.

The court further held that Windvogel, a member of the 28s gang, has had a previous record of convictions, all for violent crimes committed between 2006 and 2018.

Earlier during his trial, the prosecution said that the deceased was on her way to the bus stop in Bonnievale, when Windvogel approached her.

“He called her but she did not respond.

“He then chased after her as she turned to go home.

“He then took out a knife and stabbed her in the face, neck, upper body, lower body, arms, and legs.

“Kortjie’s mother tried to intervene but Windvogel lunged at her.

“He then sat on top of Kortjie and continued to stab her.

“Kortjie, aged 36, died at the scene.

“He was arrested that same morning after community members chased him,” Eric Ntabazalila, its spokesman, had said.

During the trial, state prosecutor, Elton Willmse, also said that Windvogel had a propensity to commit violent crimes.

He said that Kortjie’s murder was the convict’s fifth violent offence.

“He was previously convicted of an offence where violence was an element, as he did not want to accept that the relationship was over.

“Again, in this matter, he would not take no for an answer.

“He admitted to having a problem with controlling his anger, yet he still armed himself with a knife,” he added.
