Court sentences tailor to 6 months imprisonment for stealing 2 cellphones

A Jos Area Court, on Thursday, sentenced a 27-year-old man, Annas Lawal, to six months imprisonment for stealing two  cellphones.

Lawal was convicted and sentenced after he pleaded guilty to stealing the two phones together valued at N41,000. and begged the court for leniency.

Delivering judgment, the court ordered the convict to pay a compensation of N41,000 to the complainant.

The panel of judges, comprising Malam Sadiq Adam and Mr Hyacenth Dolnaan, however, gave the convict an option to pay N20,000 as fine, or spend six months in prison.

Periscope International reports that the Prosecutor, Insp. Ibrahim Gokwat, had told the court that one Eric Nundu reported the matter at the ‘A’ division Police station on Dec. 21, 2022.

According to Gokwat, Nundu reported that the convict forcefully snatched his cellphones from him on his way to work.

The prosecutor disclosed that the convict had confessed to committing the crime during police investigation.

He said that the crime contravenes the Plateau State Penal Code law of Northern Nigeria.
