Court sentences thief to sweep mosque for 6 months

A Grade 1 Area Court in Dei-Dei, Abuja, on Wednesday ordered a 28-year-old man, Anas Ibrahim, to sweep the community central mosque for six months for belonging to a gang of thieves.

The Judge, Mr Saminu Suleiman, however, ordered the convict to pay an option of N20,000 fine or serve the sentence.

Ibrahim, of Zuba Fruit Market, Abuja, had pleaded guilty to belonging to a gang of thieves and begged the court for leniency.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Mr Chinedu Ogada, told the court that the convict was arrested based on information received from a reliable source.

Ogada said the complainant had  reported the matter at the Zuba Police Station on Jan. 2.

He said the complainant reported that the convict was accommodating thieves and was also selling hard drugs to them.

The prosecutor said that after taking the drugs the hoodlums would attack innocent citizens at Zuba.

Ogada said that during police investigation, the convict confessed to the crime but all efforts to arrest his accomplices failed.

He said that the convict’s offence contravened the provisions of Section 30B of Penal Code.
