Court to sentence ex-senate deputy president Ekweremadu, wife, doctor May 5
A London court has fixed May 5 for the sentencing of former Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Sen Ike Ekweremadu, his wife, Beatrice, and their doctor, Obinna Obeta.
The trio were earlier this week convicted of organ trafficking, in the first verdict of its kind under the Modern Slavery Act in the United Kingdom.
Following a six-week trial at the Old Bailey, Ekweremadu, 60, Beatrice, 56, and Obeta, 51, were found guilty of facilitating the travel of a young Nigerian man to Britain to exploit him by harvesting his kidney to implant it in his daughter who had a damaged kidney.
