EFCC operatives arrest Abuja bank manager for hoarding new naira notes
Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday arrested the Operations Manager of a leading Commercial bank in Abuja for refusing to load the bank’s Automated Teller Machines, ATMs, with the recently redesigned new naira notes despite having about N30 million of the currency in the branch’s vaults.
Periscope International gathered that prior to his being whisked away for further questioning, the anti-graft personnel ordered the loading of all the ATMs and the payment of the stipulated amount across the counter to the delight of the distraught customers who had spent hours on queues without getting the new notes.
The EFCC’s action was in continuation of the ongoing surveillance and visit to banks across the country to access their vaults and verify whether they were deliberately refusing to dispense the redesigned Naira notes.
More than five bank branches were covered by the operatives in Abuja on Monday, while similar exercises were carried out in Zonal Commands across the country.
According to the EFCC, the operation will continue until normalcy is restored to the banking system.
The EFCC also urged Nigerians who are finding it difficult to access their funds at any bank and suspect foul play to contact it for immediate intervention.
