Operatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, have raided the home of former President of the United States, Donald Trump.
FBI is the domestic intelligence and security service of the USA and its principal federal law enforcement agency.
The former President, who confirmed this in a statement on Tuesday, said that a search warrant was executed at his Mar-a-Lago resort and home in Palm Beach, Florida.
“My beautiful home under siege, raided and occupied by a large group of FBI agents.
“They even broke into my safe!” Trump tweeted.
According to reports, ever since his exit from office in 2021, Trump has regarded the resort as his home and political headquarters.
He did not say what the agents were looking for or if they removed any materials from his home and resort.
Likewise, both the FBI and the Justice Department have kept mum since Trump made the development public.
It was not equally clear if it was the Attorney General, Merrick Garland that personally authorized the search.
However, citing undisclosed sources close to the investigation, the New York Times, claimed the search was focused on materials Trump allegedly took with him to Florida after the end of his presidency, including classified documents.
The U.S. Justice Department had launched an early-stage investigation into Trump’s removal of official presidential records to Mar-a-Lago, Reuters earlier reported.
The investigation comes after the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration in February notified Congress that it had recovered about 15 boxes of White House documents from Trump’s Florida home, some of which contained classified materials.
Trump, who was in office from 2017 to 202, made history as the only president in American history to have been impeached twice.
After he pressured Ukraine to investigate the incumbent president, Joe Biden in 2019, Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress in December.
The Senate acquitted him of both charges in February 2020.
In January 2021, the House of Representatives impeached him for a second time, for incitement of insurrection.
Trump was yet again acquitted by the Senate in February, after he had already left office.
Despite losing his re-election bid to Biden who is a Democrat, Trump has remained heavily involved in the Republican Party.
