Fulani herdsmen sack Edo community, annex their farms, homes, properties
Fulani herdsmen have attacked and sacked a farming community in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State and chased away the residents of the community.
Sources within the community told Periscope International on Monday that the herdsmen wore military uniforms.
Residents said that the assailants stormed the 2nd Abumere Ojigbelu Camp, chased the villagers away, and took over their farms, homes, and properties.
According to the villagers, most of them have taken refuge in other communities around Okada following the attack and forceful occupation of their ancestral lands.
Reacting to the incident, Edo State Police Command spokesman, Kotongs Bello, however, told journalists at the time of enquiry that the command was unaware of the development.
Periscope International reports that the forceful taking over and renaming of the ancestral lands of some communities in Nigeria by marauding Fulani herders has been on the increase in Nigeria in recent years, especially in Plateau State and other states in North-central Nigeria.
Despite the well documented cases of such wanton and provocative forceful occupation, the federal government seems to be helpless or looking the other way while such impunity seems to fester ceaselessly.
