Gov Matawalle loses reelection bid to PDP candidate Dauda Lawal
Zamfara State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the March 18 elections in the state, Dauda Lawal has defeated incumbent Governor Bello Matawalle in the biggest upset of the 2023 general elections.
Announcing the results in the state winner in Gusau, the state capital in the early hours of Tuesday, the State Returning Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Lawal polled 377,726 votes to defeat Matawalle of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who polled 311,976.
Matawalle automatically became governor in 2019 following the nullification of the victory of his predecessor by a court after the allegations of an illegal state executive council of the party was proved in court.
He later defected from the PDP on which platform he became governor to the All Progressives Congress and facilitated the impeachment of his deputy who refused to move with him
