Gov Yahaya Bello cheats death as gunmen open fire on convoy

Gov Yahaya Bello of Kogi

Kogi State Gov Yahaya Bello on Saturday narrowly escaped death as gunmen opened fire on his convoy near Lokoja, the state capital.

It was gathered that the Governor’s convoy was allegedly blocked and attacked by the assailants in the early hours of the day.

Confirming the incident in a statement issued on Saturday, the state Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, said the unexpected attack occurred near the Naval Base, a few kilometres from Lokoja.

Fanwo said that the attackers were supporters of Gov Bello’s opponent, Alh. Muritala Ajaka.

The Commissioner explained that the motorcade of Ajaka, on sighting that of the Governor, blocked the road, then suddenly some of his armed thugs started shooting sporadically at Governor Bello’s convoy.

He said, ”A Tundra branded with the logo of the SDP and with SDP flags also blocked the Governor’s vehicle, and occupants of the SDP-branded Tundra were armed with Rifles and short guns.”

The Commissioner said that the Governor left the scene unscathed, adding that there was no cause for panic.

He, however, revealed that some security aides and other aides attached to the Governor sustained some degrees of injuries and had been rushed to hospitals for medical attention.

Fanwo added that Gov Bello warned that APC members should remain calm and not engage in any form of reprisal attack following the attack on his convoy.
