Group warns Plateau governorship candidates, supporters against social media attacks

Ahead of the Governorship and State Assembly Elections rescheduled for Saturday, 18th March, the Plateau Initiative for Development and Advancement of the Natives (PIDAN) has warned the governorship candidates, their parties and supporters against the growing trend of vicious attacks by the supporters of their candidates targeting opponents on social media.

The group made this known in a statement issued in Jos, jointly signed by its Chairman, Prof. Aboi Madaki and Secretary, Cmr. Nanle Gujor, made available to Periscope International on Thursday.

The group gave the charge after its emergency EXCO meeting, while reviewing the conduct of the February 25 Elections and looking ahead of the March 18 polls, stressing that such attracts against opponents were capable of overheating the polity and culminating in unpleasant consequences.

PIDAN, which described the development as “hate campaigns,” noted that the trend, if left unchecked, would sow the seed of perpetual hatred among the various ethnic groups in the state.

The group, therefore, called on political parties, their candidates and supporters, to exercise a high level of decorum and utmost restraint, so as to nip such ugly activities in the bud, failing which it could create rifts among the state’s indigenous communities and breakdown of law and order.

According to PIDAN, information is being distorted and sometimes amplified to cause mistrust and enmity, and consequently overheating the polity.

It further admonished people to avoid tendencies that were based on falsehood, and or likely to create hatred and insults, as well as unkind remarks and character assassination of the respective candidates.

“While we commend the candidates for conducting themselves well, we, however, appeal to all their supporters to bear in mind that all the candidates are ours and have the right to aspire to govern the State.

“They should also know that Power comes from God. It therefore behoves on us to be mature and accommodating one another,” PIDAN noted.

It called on INEC to note and address all the lapses which were identified during the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly Elections, with the view of making the forthcoming elections seamless.

PIDAN also lauded the citizens of the State for the peaceful manner in which they conducted themselves, before and after the Presidential and National Assembly Elections.

It also lauded Plateau community leaders for carrying out the resolutions of the PIDAN Council meeting of 4th February 2023, wherein it was resolved that during the presidential poll, they should support any presidential candidate from the southern part of the country for the sake of equity.
