Gunmen kill Yobe Islamic cleric, Sheikh Goni

A Yobe-based Islamic scholar, Sheikh Goni Aisami-Gashua has been killed by some gunmen on the Kano-Maiduguri highway.

Reports said Sheikh Goni was trailed by the assailants who were trailing him in a bus and who subsequently killed him at Jajimaji, the headquarters of Karasuwa local government council of the state while travelling from Gashua to Kano.

It was gathered that the criminals killed the cleric around 10am at Jajimaji, a distance of less than 30 kilometers away from Gashua, the hometown of the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.

Dungus Abdulkarim, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, and spokesman for the police command in Yobe confirmed the incident to newsmen on Saturday.

He said that the police had arrested the suspects who were in a bus while trailing the cleric and wielding AK-47 rifles.
