The late Coach Obi and the ill fated team bus
The Coach of Heartland Football Club, Owerri, owned by the Imo State Government, has died, while many players have been hospitalised following a ghastly auto crash involving the team bus.
The incident occurred on Friday when they were traveling to Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital for the Ifeanyi Ekwueme TICO/SELECT Pre-Season Tournament.
The coach was said to be sitting on the front seat of the bus when it collided with a truck.
The 57-year-old coach reportedly died on the way to the hospital.
The late Obi was a Nigerian youth international goalkeeper who played for Nigeria in the 1988 Seoul Olympics football event.
“The accident happened at Umunna, close to Okigwe still within Imo State.
“The vehicle in its attempt to dodge an oncoming vehicle collided with another carelessly parked vehicle from another accident.
“Though no death was recorded some players and officials sustained injuries and have been taken to the hospital,” the club wrote in a statement issued late on Friday.
