Hippo kills man while fishing in Kebbi river

A wild hippopotamus on Sunday killed a 60-year-old fisherman, Usman Maigadi, at Yauri River in Kebbi State.

It was gathered that the victim was fishing when the animal attacked in defense of its young.

The deceased as a guard at the Emir of Yauri’s Orchard Farm.

Confirming the incident, Gov. Nasir Idris of Kebbi State condoled the Yauri Emirate and Maigadi’s family.

“I want the emirate and members of the deceased’s family to take heart and accept the will of the Almighty in good faith.

“I pray to Allah to forgive the deceased’s shortcomings and grant him Jannatul Firdaus,” the governor said in a statement issued by his spokesman, Ahmed Idris, on Sunday.

Also confirming the tragedy, Yauri Local Government Chairman, Abubakar Shu’aibu, said the victim had been buried on Sunday.

“Maigadi has been buried according to Islamic rites in Yauri, after a funeral prayer,” Shu’aibu said.
