LP makes bold political statement, grabs 30 NASS seats
20 years after its formation, the Labour Party (LP), Nigeria’s pro-workers political party, has made a bold statement with a significant inroad into the country’s mainstream politics by winning 7 Senate seats and 22 House of Representatives seats in the February 25 National Assembly (NASS) elections.
LP, which was previously known as the Party for Social Democracy (PSD) has been relatively obscure in the political arena before now.
The party gained unprecedented popularity with what has been described by many as the Peter Obi phenomenon, referring to Obi, the party’s charismatic presidential candidate in the February 25 presidential elections.
LP’s milestone in the just-concluded elections for the Red and Green chambers is credited to the fame and acceptance of the party’s flag bearer by an overwhelming youth majority known as ‘Obidients’.
Prof Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the results at a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on Saturday.
Yakubu declared the winners for 423 National Assembly seats while supplementary elections would be held in 46 constituencies.
The elections for the remaining seats were declared inconclusive, while the supplementary polls election will hold after Governorship Elections.
The breakdown of the results for Senate and House of Representatives Elections is as follows:
SENATE:
APC 51
PDP 31
LP 7
NNPP 2
APGA 1
YPP 1
SDP 2
REPS:
APC 88
PDP 57
LP 22
NNPP 3
APGA 4
YPP 2
ADC 1
LP is expected to clinch more seats not only in the remaining National Assembly seats but also in the state assembly seats, as well as the governorship seats in some states to herald its arrival on the Nigerian political landscape and consolidate for future elections.
