MaxAir Limited has confirmed the safe return of Flight VM1623 to the Maiduguri International Airport following an engine failure detected during ascent.
The flight, registered as 5N-BBM, had to make an air return to ensure passenger safety.
Borno State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Umar Kadafur, and over 100 passengers narrowly escaped tragedy after the Max Air aircraft experienced an engine fire shortly after takeoff from the Maiduguri International Airport.
The incident occurred around 7pm on Wednesday when the aircraft, en route to Abuja, suffered an engine failure caused by a bird strike about 10 minutes into the flight.
The pilot and crew had managed to execute an emergency landing back at the Maiduguri Airport, averting a disaster.
The airline in a statement on Thursday explained that the Captain initiated the air return after noticing abnormal engine parameters.
“Flight VM1623 with registration number 5N-BBM made an air return due to an observed abnormality in the engine parameters during ascent, prompting the Captain to initiate an air return to Maiduguri International Airport.”
MaxAir assured that all safety measures were adhered to during the incident.
“Following Standard Operational Procedures, the affected engine was shut down, and the aircraft landed safely.
“All passengers and crew members remained unharmed,” the statement added.
“To minimise delays, MaxAir promptly dispatched a replacement aircraft. A rescue aircraft was promptly dispatched to Maiduguri to ensure passengers reached their destinations with minimal delay.
“We deeply regret any inconvenience caused and sincerely appreciate the patience and cooperation of all affected passengers,” the airline said.
MaxAir further stated its commitment to safety and operational excellence.
“MaxAir is working closely with aviation authorities to investigate the cause of the engine abnormality.
“As a leading airline in Nigeria, we remain committed to upholding the highest safety and operational standards, ensuring the trust and confidence of our valued passengers.”
