Gov Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau has said that the late former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Lt.-Gen. Jeremiah Useni, lived a life exemplified by selflessness, compassion and generosity, which legacy would endure in the hearts of those he impacted.
The Governor made this known during a condolence visit to the family of the deceased former Plateau South Senator at his residence in Abuja on Sunday.
He highlighted the late Useni’s invaluable contributions to Plateau State and the nation, noting that he was a distinguished military leader, who brought pride to Plateau State through his exemplary service both in the military and in politics.
Mutfwang recounted Useni’s distinguished career, serving honorably as Governor of Old Bendel State, Minister of Transportation, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and as Senator representing Plateau South in the 8th National Assembly.
“Gen. Useni was a refined and accomplished leader, whose life epitomized selfless service, discipline, and compassion.
“Plateau people are proud to identify with him as a towering figure who brought honor to the state.
“I am here to pay my respects to the immediate family of our late father, Lt. General Jeremiah Useni, who passed away a few days ago.
“I closely monitored his health since last year and was privileged to visit him on multiple occasions. Less than a month ago, I sat with him, and we prayed together.
“We all hoped he would recover and continue playing his role as a father and elder statesman. His status transcends the Tarok nation and Plateau State.
“It is no exaggeration to say that, at one point in this country, he was effectively the de facto number two,” Mutfwang stressed.
The Governor further offered heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s immediate family, the Tarok nation, Plateau State, and the nation at large, and prayed for divine comfort and strength during this difficult time.
He emphasized the need for unity among stakeholders to ensure a befitting burial for the elder statesman, acknowledging the profound impact of his life and legacy on humanity.
Mutfwang, who was warmly received by Sen. Napoleon Bali, a son-in-law to the late General, alongside family members and some Tarok Elders, also described the departed elder statesman as a beacon of hope and a model of selfless service to God and humanity.
Responding, Sen. Bali expressed gratitude to the governor and his delegation, saying that the visit had eased the family’s pain.
Also speaking, Prof. Doknan Sheni, a Taroh elder and former Vice Chancellor of the Plateau State University, Bokkos, and Mr Nanyak Kumsal, Director of the Abuja Liaison Office, appreciated the Governor for the visit and swift intervention.
They both assured the governor of their unwavering commitment to ensuring a befitting burial for the late elder statesman.
