NFF reverses self on foreign coach, settles for Eguavoen, Amuneke
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has decided to settle for its Technical Director, Austin Eguavoen, as the permanent coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria with former U-17 coach, Emmanuel Amuneke, as his assistant.
The NFF has now agreed to give Eguavoen a two-year contract with an improvement on his salary from the present N3 million, although the source did not disclose the new salary.
The choice of both Eguavoen and Amuneke was arrived at a meeting in Abuja between the Sports Minster Sunday Dare and officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) according to the Sun.
The Minister was said to have stopped the planned appointment of Portuguese Jose Peseiro and ordered the immediate draft of Eguavoen and Amuneke to head the Super Eagles.
The NFF confirmed the Portuguese as the new Super Eagles coach following the sack of Gernot Rohr in December 2021.
However, Jose Peseiro is said to have not officially signed any contract after Rohr’s sack to enable him take over the national team after the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
Peseiro reportedly agreed in principle with the NFF to take charge of the Super Eagles in March, when the financial modalities must have been sorted out.
The development comes after Eguavoen’s ‘impressive’ performance at ongoing AFCON, where he led the Super Eagles to hundred percent performance in the group stage before crashing out in the round of 16 to Tunisia.
