Nigerian female lawyer bags UK Chevening scholarship, switches to psychology
A Nigerian female lawyer, Hafsah Dauda, has won the United Kingdom’s Chevening Scholarship to earn a Master’s degree in Psychology in the UK.
The Chevening Scholarship is a yearly award provided by the United Kingdom government to allow international students to earn a Master’s degree for free at any university in the UK.
Hafsah announced her emergence as one of the winners in a post on her LinkedIn:
“I am delighted to announce that I shall be pursuing an Msc Psychological Studies with Mental Health at the prestigious University of Aberdeen, UK.” she wrote.
She had previously earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from Bayero University, BUK, North-West, Nigeria.
Explaining why she switched to study Psychology in the UK, Hafsat said that she finds the study of Psychology natural and challenging for her.
“Deciding to transition from Law to Psychology has been one of the most challenging yet most natural things for me.
“But it had remained a dream until I decided to take a leap of faith,” she said.
She expressed high interest in helping her country, Nigeria address the psychological issues faced by the victims of terrorism in the country.
“Coming from a region with a high poverty and illiteracy rate, which has been further riddled by insurgency, I am happy for this opportunity to study Psychology.
It’ll help me address the psychological issues faced by the victims of insurgency and banditry caused by the years of unrest,” she explained.
Hafsat thanked God for her success in the scholarship applications and also thanked the UK Government and University of Aberdeen for funding her course of study.
