Maje spearheads reconciliation of estranged bedfellows

When on the eve of Nigeria’s independence, noble laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka was commissioned to write a play for the the celebration, he scripted what he christened “A Dance of the Forests.”

He made an allegorical reference to the 1960 Independence celebration as a ” gathering of the tribes”.

In it, he talked about the socio-political situation in the “New Nation” called Nigeria, viewed alongside a disorganized past, present and the search for an imaginary perfect society.

A meeting of sworn enemies without clear leadership

This is exactly what the Plateau State All Progressives Congress, APC’s,  “Reconciliation Committee” headed by former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ahmed Maje is set to achieve.

The reconciliation meeting took place at the conference hall of Nassarawa State Government House, Lafia, on Friday, 27th June, 2024.

I do not envy his assignment at all, considering the array of problems and conglomeration of once comrades, who are now strange bed-fellows.

Just take a cursory look at the roll call of those in attendance- They are former governor of Plateau State, Sen. Joshua Chibi Dariye, former Minister and Deputy Gov, Dame Pauline Tallen, former governor and now “Senator”, Simon Lalong, and Chief Amos Gizo.

Others are Plateau APC gubernatorial candidate in 2023, Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, Rep Yusuf Gagdi, Mr Festus Fuanteer, Prof. Nora Dadu’ut, John Dafaan, state APC chairman, Rufus Bature, among many other party stalwarts.

They are still in the same party but divided into 1 and 2, because of the inherent lack of internal party democracy.

Come to think of it, why would the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, issue a fiat that Lalong is the leader of the party in Plateau State where other notable people like Sen Dariye and Dame Pauline Tallen hold sway?

Dariye, Tallen better placed to lead

This is clearly an attempt by the SGF to upturn the apple cart, which they have vehemently resisted, hence the ongoing state of cataclysm in the party.

If truth must be told, in addition to the aforementioned, it is Lalong’s lack of control over his brothers and kinsmen that is responsible for the present state of topsyturvydom in the party in Plateau State.

This, by the grace of God, will continue to haunt the party up to 2027 and beyond.

In this sense therefore, the Lafia meeting is not only a smokescreen but also akin to Soyinka’s “gathering of the tribes”, because nothing meaningful can come out of it.

I can authoritatively assure you that most of those in attendance were, as it where, just there to satisfy all righteousness and, in no distant time, the hydra-headed monster will resurface.

The APC in Plateau State is already in disarray. All they can do is lick their wounds and face the reality that brought them to power, like a special purpose vehicle,SPV, in 2015.

The only option left, in the very few days ahead, is that the stage is set for us (we that are already across watching) to witness an influx of APC faithfuls to our side.

This is indeed the final nailing of the coffin which, by the grace of God, shall come to pass.
