PDP female candidate floors APC Plateau Assembly Speaker, as Majority Leader loses
Mrs. Happiness Akawu, the candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Saturday’s House of Assembly elections for Pengana Constituency of Bassa Local Government Area, has defeated the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Mr Yakubu Sanda, the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly.
According to the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Returning Officer, Akawu polled 9,926 votes to defeat Sanda, who scored 7,936 votes.
Mr Faisal Haruna Maitala of the Peoples Redemption Party,PRP scored 6,721 votes to place third, while Labour Party’s Dankama polled 1,028 votes.
Also, as if to complete the conquest of the ruling APC by the main opposition PDP, the APC’s Majority Leader of the State Assembly, Mr Daniel Naanlong, lost his Mikang State Constituency seat to Mr Mathew Sule of PDP.
According to the results announced by the electoral umpire, INEC, PDP’s Sule scored 12,880 to banish APC’s Naanlong, a third term seeker, with 9,848 votes from returning to the state assembly.
Periscope International recalls that the defeated speaker was illegally elected by six members out of the 24-member assembly when the legitimate Speaker Abok was illegally impeached by the six members, including Naanlong, in questionable circumstances which critics said the state government had its underhand in it.
The implication of the development is that, based on the state assembly results coming in from across the state, with the PDP’s sweeping wins in many more constituencies, the state legislature is set for a complete turnaround that would relegate the APC to opposition status in the incoming dispensation.
