PDP wins second senatorial district in Plateau, inches towards governor’s seat

Rep Simon Mwadkwon, a member of the House of Representatives, Barkin Ladi, Riyom federal constituency, has won Saturday’s Plateau North Senatorial District election.

Declaring the results, INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Jeff Doki, said that Mwadkwon of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was returned as the winner of the election.

He said that the senator-elect polled a total of 155,681 votes to defeat his closest rival, Gyang Azi of the Labour Party (LP), who polled 79,831 votes.

According Doki, Mr Chris Giwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) came third after polling 78,392 votes.

Mwadkwon, a two-time Reps member, was first elected executive chairman of Riyom Local Government Area during the Gov Jonah Jang Adminstration in Plateau State, before proceeding to the Green Chambers.

He will replace incumbent Sen I.D Gyang, who lost to him during the PDP senatorial primary elections.

Mwadkwon’s victory brings to two the number of senators that the opposition PDP has won.

Gov Simon Lalong of the All Progressives Congress, APC, was earlier humiliated in the Plateau South Senatorial District election which he contested but was bombed out by a retired Air Force chief, Air Vice-Marshal Napoleon Bali of the PDP.

Periscope International reports that with both Plateau North and South senatorial zones won by PDP, while awaiting the outcome of Plateau Central zone’s election, the coast may have been cleared for PDP to snatch the governorship seat of the state from APC.

Meanwhile, the presidential candidate of Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, was declared the winner of the presidential election in Plateau State, after dramatically beating the ruling APC candidate, Tinubu and PDP’s Atiku to second and third positions, respectively.
