Plateau Gov Caleb Mutfwang
The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) will soon begin preparations for the conduct of local government elections in the state, its chairman, Plangji Cishak, has said.
Cishak, who announced this at a news conference in Jos, added that PLASIEC was dedicated to nurturing democratic leadership structures at the grassroots.
According to him, the commission is also committed to rewriting the narrative of local government elections in the state and Nigeria through transparency, fairness, professionalism, and inclusivity.
“We therefore call on citizens to join the commission in the journey to rebuild, retool, and reorganise the institution above individuals and narrow interests.
“This will ensure the growth of democratic ideals in Plateau and positively impact democracy in Nigeria,” Cishak said.
It would be recalled that Gov Caleb Mutfwang had upon assumption of office last year sacked the 17 local government chairmen in the state, who were mainly members of the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC.
The governor had immediately replaced them with appointed transition implementation council chairmen, who are members of his ruling Peoples Democratic Party, APC.
Also, recently, the Supreme Court reserved judgement in a suit filed by the federal government against the governors of the 36 states seeking to enforce local government autonomy.
