Plateau ex-SSG Rufus Bature emerges state APC Chairman

A former Secretary to the Government of Plateau State, Hon. Rufus Bature, has emerged as the state chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the the party’s state congress which took place on Saturday.

Bature became the Chairman of the ruling party as a consensus candidate following an understanding that was struck by the party’s stakeholders at the Crest Hotel Jos, venue of the event.

The new parry chairman served as the SSG during the first tenure of Governor Simon Lalong before he resigned to contest for the Plateau North Senatorial District and lost to the incumbent Sen. ID Gyang of the PDP.

He is an experienced politician who was a member of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Barkin Ladi Constituency, on the platform of the defunct APP, from 1999 to 2007, where he was the Minority Leader, while Governor Lalong was the Speaker of the House.

Bature who is of the Berom majority ethnic group of Plateau North Senatorial Zone, has been a serial gubernatorial aspirant on the platform of opposition parties in the state.

He joined forces with Governor Lalong and others in the APC prior to 2015 where he was the Director-General of Lalong’s election campaign, and successfully dislodged the PDP led by his kinsman, former Governor Jonah Jang from power, and was promptly rewarded with the SSG position.

In his acceptance speech, Bature expressed his appreciation to the members and leaders of the party for electing him and other new members of the party’s executive council.

He noted that their election which was done through consensus without any challenges, which meant that the party had fully evolved and promised to reposition the state APC towards taking major strides in good governance, inclusiveness and fairness to the people.

The party chairman-elect thanked Gov Lalong for giving the state the needed leadership that had endeared APC to the people and continued to give them hope.

He said the new party executive would support the governor and also carry along all its teeming members at all times and avail them a level playing field to enable them to aspire to any position.

The congress which was witnessed by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, was conducted by the APC State Congress Committee set up by the national body.

The new executive council of the party comprises 36 members. They include Fidelis Longban, Secretary, Phillip Adik, Organising Secretary, Nanloh Dashe, Youth Leader, among others.
