Student allegedly dies after being punished by teacher over assignment

A Federal Government College, FGC Kwali, Abuja student, has died after being allegedly punished by his teacher for failing to complete his assignment

The JSS II student, Yahaya Aliyu, 13, was alleged to have been flogged for failing to complete his assignment due to illness, sources said.

A source familiar with the incident said Aliyu, who had taken ill could not submit his assignment when his colleagues were submitting theirs and when his teacher requested for it, he failed to give a cogent reason

This angered the teacher who allegedly flogged him and he was hit on the head severally, after which he sat down putting his head on his table.

Some of his colleagues who noticed that he was quiet checked on him. and raised the alarm when he appeared to have slumped following which he was rushed to the hospital, where he was certified dead.

It was learnt that the students of the institution protested on the premises of the school over Aliyu’s death.

When contacted, the FCT Police Command’s spokesperson, ASP Mariam Yusuf, confirmed the incident, adding that the police was investigating the matter.

Also confirming the incident, Engr Musa Ibrahim the National President of Federal Gov. College Kwali Old Students Association (FEDGOKOSA), said meetings and consultations were ongoing to unravel the reason behind the student’s death and douse the tension

He said that calls, consultations, clarifications with different personalities, ranging from the student’s father, principal, USOSA, his relatives, the alumni rep on SBMC, etc, were ongoing all of which were geared towards unravelling the cause of the demise of the boy, which he said had smeared the reputation of the institution.

The FEDGOKOSA President said NEC members had all been busy on the issue, adding that there would be a press release on the matter by NEC at its Inaugural meeting.scheduled to hold soon.
