Suspected kidnappers kill lawyer after failed abduction attempt

Two gunmen believed to be kidnappers have shot dead a lawyer in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital. 

Sources said that the deceased lawyer, Benedict Azza, was pursued by the assailants from his house when he fled to where he was subdued and shot dead on the highway.

The late Azza was said to have initially escaped from his killers when they first made an attempt to abduct him at his residence at Saminaka area, bye-pass in Gusau.

Periscope International gathered that the deceased legal practitioner escaped from his residence by rushing to his car and driving off into the main road, but the hoodlums pursued him and shot him three times to death.

Confirming the incident, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Zamfara State chapter, in a statement issued on Friday by its chairman, Junaidu Abubakar, said the assailants killed him and left his corpse on the roadside.

The NBA chairman said, “Yesterday at about 2230hrs, while I was in my house, I received three different phone calls from our colleagues informing me that B. T. Azza Esq. was shot dead by unknown gunmen and his body was lying on the roadside along Bye-pass near FRSC office, Gusau.”

“BT Azza was shot dead by two unknown gunmen suspected to be kidnappers who came on a motorcycle.

“The information has it that, the gunmen wanted to kidnap him at his house situated at Saminaka Area, Behind Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Headquarters, Byepass, Gusau.

“He was able to escape, drove his vehicle and ran to the road side, where the gunmen pursued him and shot him dead.”

Zamfara State Police Command spokesman, Mohammed Shehu, a Superintendent of Police, also confirmed the tragic incident.

Shehu said that the police had already commenced investigation into the matter to unravel the circumstances that led to the gruesome killing of the lawyer.

He added that the police and other relevant security agencies were strategizing to improve the security situation in the state to build the confidence of the people.
