Fresh reasons have emerged on why Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission arrested a former governor of Nasarawa State, Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura and his wife, Mairo on Wednesday.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arrested the former governor and serving senator alongside the former First Lady of the state but released the duo after grilling them for several hours at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja.
Although details of the allegation against the ex-governor and his wife were sketchy as of press time, insider sources said that the arrest bordered on an alleged breach of trust and misappropriation of funds allegedly perpetrated during Al-Makura’s tenure as governor.
Spokesperson of EFCC, Mr Wilson Uwujaren could not be reached for comment on the couple’s arrest immediately.
Al-Makura was the Governor of Nasarawa State between 2011 and 2019 before he was elected as Senator representing Nasarawa South Senatorial District at the National Assembly.
Mrs Al-Makura is currently the Special Assistant to the President (Office of the First Lady) on African First Ladies Peace Mission,AFLPM, with Headquarters in Abuja.
