Woman drowns 2 daughters inside well in Osogbo, slated for psychiatric test

The Osun State Police Command says a woman has been arrested for drowning her two daughters inside a well filled with water in Osogbo.

The Command’s Spokesperson, SP Yemisi Opalola, who made this known in Osogbo on Thursday  while briefing newsmen on the incident, said the woman would have to be evaluated by psychiatrists to ascertain her mental state.

She said that the woman was currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and that she had actually confessed to drowning her daughters.

Opalola said, “It is pathetic that no one saw Omowunmi (the culprit) when she perpetrated the act on Monday night.

“The culprit who lives around Oke Baale Area, Osogbo, was said to be having some kind of mental problem.

“She was said to have been deported from abroad and it is assumed that, maybe the deportation affected her mentally.

“When interrogated, she said she did it, that she drowned her daughters. Her owning to the crime without remorse, gives suspicion to the speculations that she might be having some mental problem.

“However, doctors in the psychiatric hospital have been contacted to evaluate her, because the police do not work on assumptions.

“She is still with the state CID and the bodies of her daughters (aged five and eight) were recovered yesterday (Wednesday), with the help of fire service.

“It actually took serious efforts from Tuesday, to retrieve the dead bodies from the well because the well was filled with water, but the body of the girls have been deposited at the mortuary,” she said.

Opalola expressed her dismay over the incident for the fact that the family of the culprit could not rally round her and take her for treatment.

The PPRO said that when the family noticed that  she was mentally unstable, they should have also taken her children into their custody.

She said if the family of the culprit had taken charge of her situation, the deaths of the children would have been adverted.

The incident which took place on Monday was only discovered on Tuesday by the woman’s neighbors, who noticed that her two children were conspicuous missing and decided to ask her about  their whereabouts of her children.

She was said to have blatantly told them that she had  drowned them in a nearby well filled with water, adding that her daughters’ glory had been stolen. The daughters’ corpses were later retrieved from the well.
