World Cup: Argentina mulls putting Messi’s face on national currency
The government of Argentina is considering putting the face of the country’s national football team captain, Lionel Messi on the banknotes following the historic 2022 FIFA World Cup victory.
Argentina’s newspaper, El Financiero news reports that officials of the country’s financial governing body consider the gesture to be the best way to immortalize Messi and commemorate Argentina’s World Cup win.
They are proposing to have Messi’s face printed on a grand bill as the figure begins with the number 10, the same jersey the forward wears.
Messi scored a double in 120 minutes of a 3-3 draw with France in the final before his team sealed a 4-2 penalty shootout win.
After decades of goals, dreams, and defeats, the Paris Saint-Germain superstar finally raised the trophy on December 19.
The financial governing body also mulls having “La Scaloneta” the nickname of Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni. inscribed on the back of the note.
That would honour not only his FIFA World Cup triumph but also his tenure that saw his side lift the Copa America in 2021 and beat European Champions Italy in the Finnalissima this year.
It would be recalled that In 1978, Argentina’s Central Bank introduced commercial coins to recognise the nation’s first World Cup win.
