It added that Itooka was born on May 23, 1908, in Osaka.

The government said that her emergence as the oldest in the country follows the death of the previous title holder, Fusa Tatsumi, who died of old age on Tuesday.

According to a staff, when Itooka first entered a nursing home in Ashiya Hyogo prefecture, in 2019, she was still able to move around independently.

The staff added that of recent she had to be escorted in a wheelchair to take her meals in the living room.

Periscope International reports that Japanese are known for their longevity, which surpasses that of other countries globally.

Many attribute this rare feat to the type of food that the Japanese eat and their responsible lifestyle generally, while some say it is due to some genetic factors.
