Sorghum
Nigeria ranks as the world’s second largest sorghum producer after the United State of America.
According to latest reports, over five million hectares of land in Nigeria are currently occupied with sorghum cultivation.
This is said to account for the production of 6.5 to 6.8 million tons of sorghum annually.
Sorghum is mainly grown in the northern states of Nigeria.
Some of Nigeria’s Sorghum producing states include Jigawa, Plateau, Benue, Kano, Katsina, Adamawa, Kaduna, Borno and Kano.
Sorghum only does well in the Savannah belt of Nigeria.
The crop is usually grown in the rainy season mainly because of the availability of water.
