Suspected terrorists planted an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on the highway killing four persons and injuring 21 others along the Katarko-Goniri Road in the Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.

The victims, mostly from the Gotala Community, were on their way to the popular Buniyadi market on Friday when their vehicle stepped on the IED.

The victims’ corpses were taken home for burial while the others are given medical treatment at the specialist hospital and Yobe State University Teaching Hospital Damaturu, respectively.

The Gotala community is located on the fringes of the Sambisa Forest where the suspected Boko haram insurgents have been operating for the past one and a half decades.

A source claimed that some vigilantes and military vehicles had also run over the buried IED on Friday along the same route with some either killed or injured.

As of the time of filling this report, the military had yet to issue any press statement.

The relations of the victims interviewed at the hospitals called on the Yobe State Government to as a matter of urgency reconstruct the dilapidated road to avert the activities of the insurgents as lives of the communities and the military formation at Goniri are at high risk.
