Court sentences traditional ruler to 5 years imprisonment over COVID-19 fund fraud

A United States court has sentenced the Apetu of Ipetumodu in Osun State, Oba Joseph Oloyede, to 56 months in prison over a multimillion-dollar COVID-19 relief fraud.

Oloyede, 62, who holds dual citizenship, was also ordered to pay over 4.4 million dollars in restitution.

He was also ordered to forfeit his Ohio home, and serve three years of supervised release after prison.

Prosecutors said the traditional ruler had conspired with one Edward Oluwasanmi to file 38 fraudulent loan applications under U.S. COVID-19 relief programmes.

He thereafter diverting the funds for personal gain, including land and luxury purchases.
