A 60-year-old American woman, Jacqueline Elton, who had travelled all the way from the U.S. to Nigeria to spend time with her 39-year-old male lover, Alawode Olaide, is dead.
Sources familiar with the tragedy said that Elton fell ill on Sept. 29 around 3pm and was rushed to a private hospital in Otokutu, in Warri, Delta State, but was pronounced dead on arrival at the Warri Central Hospital.
The deceased’s Nigerian lover Olaide has been taken into custody for questioning, while security agencies have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
The State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), has promised to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
A top SCID official who preferred not to be named has given assurance that its personnel would ensure that justice was done in the case.
Meanwhile, the incident has precipitated captured a groundswell of reaction on social media.
Many are of the view that the case is proof that love can bridge large distances and differences in age.
The only dark side of it all is the tragedy outcome that has turned everything into a sad and troubling mystery.
