The military in Madagascar says it has taken control of the country after lawmakers voted to impeach President Andry Rajoelina after fleeing the country following mass protests.
“We took the power, all the institutions in the republic are dissolved,” Colonel Michael Randrianirina told reporters in the capital, Antananarivo on Tuesday.
Rajoelina had earlier sought to head off the impeachment vote by dissolving parliament.
Col. Randrianirina had led the mutiny of soldiers who joined anti-government Gen Z protesters.
He said that the military had taken charge of the African island nation, after President Andry Rajoelina fled the country.
“We have taken the power,” Col. Randrianirina said on national radio.
He added that the military was dissolving all institutions except the lower house of parliament, which voted to impeach Rajoelina just minutes before his announcement.
