Somaliland has issued a strong statement reaffirming Somaliland’s determination to pursue an independent and internationally engaged future, rejecting renewed calls for unity with Somalia.

The Minister of the Presidency of the Republic of Somaliland made this known in the capital city Hargesia while speaking on national affairs.

The Minister said that Somalia has “failed in every meaningful measure,” citing the absence of functioning state institutions, ineffective governance, lack of genuine democracy, and the failure to articulate a coherent national vision.

“Somaliland cannot and will not be forced to become part of a system that has consistently failed its people,” he said.

“Our citizens made a clear choice decades ago to rebuild their state on the foundations of peace, stability, democratic governance, and the rule of law.”

The Minister emphasized that Somaliland’s achievements—relative stability, peaceful transfers of power, and growing international partnerships—stand in stark contrast to the continued political and security crises in Somalia.

“We have chosen a different path: one of stability, progress, and constructive engagement with the international community,” the statement read.

“That choice reflects the will of the Somaliland people and the realities on the ground.”

Reiterating the government’s long-standing position, the Minister stressed that Somaliland’s quest for international recognition is grounded in historical, legal, and political legitimacy.

“Our voice will be heard,” the Minister concluded. “Somaliland will continue to assert its rightful place among the nations of the world.”

The statement comes amid renewed regional and international discussions on the future of the Horn of Africa, with Somaliland officials intensifying diplomatic efforts to advance global recognition.
