Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, founding leader of the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, said at the dawn of the Islamic Republic that female prisoners should be raped before execution.
Khomeini, who died 10 years later and was succeeded by the present Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, explained that this was to ensure that virgin female prisoners did not go to heaven.
