AFCON 2022: Slow start, low scoring mark 33rd Africa Cup of Nations

All 24 teams have now played their opening games at the 33rd Africa Cup of Nations, but the tournament is off to a slow start after a series of low-scoring games.

The Evening Standard reports that Cameroon beat Burkina Faso 2-1 in the opening match of Group A, but since then no game has witnessed more than one goal.

Holders Algeria are favourites to retain their crown in Cameroon, but lumbered to a 0-0 draw with Sierra Leone in their opening group game.

Nigeria conquered Egypt in an early heavyweight clash, while Morocco took care of Ghana thanks to a 1-0 victory.

Senegal opened their campaign with a last-gasp win over Zimbabwe secured courtesy of Sadio Mane’s penalty.

Ivory Coast, another tournament favorite, also got underway with a narrow win, beating Equatorial Guinea 1-0 on Wednesday.
