President Bola Tinubu has stayed away from the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly holding in New York, United States of America, from Monday, Sept 22 to Sunday, Sept. 28, as he did last year.
This is contained in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to The President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha.
The President has instead despatched Vice President Kashim Shettima, who will lead Nigeria’s delegation to the global leaders’ summit.
It said Shettima, who is scheduled to join other leaders at the global event, which is the annual commemoration of the creation of the United Nations, will also join other dignitaries at the high-level general debates from Tuesday to Sunday.
VP Shettima will also deliver Nigeria’s national statement on behalf of President Tinubu on Wednesday between 3:00pm and 9:00pm, New York time.
He will also attend a special event on Climate for Heads of State and Government to be hosted by the UN Secretary-General on Wednesday, from 2:00pm to 6:00pm, where Nigeria is expected to announce its new Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement.
The Vice President is also slated to attend the high-level roundtable of the Global Champions on Adequate and Affordable Housing to be hosted by the President of Kenya on Sept. 24th and attend to other bilateral meetings and events.
After the UNGA, the Vice President will leave for Frankfurt, Germany, where he is slated to meet with officials of the Deutche Bank before returning to Nigeria.
