Breaking: Nigeria’s statistician-general is dead
Nigeria’s Statistician-General, Simon Harry, is dead.
He died on Wednesday morning, 13 April, in Abuja, according to the Whistler.
Ichedi Joel, Director of Communication and Public Relations Department,
Nigerian Bureau of Statistics confirmed the news.
He said that the deceased had been indisposed since last Saturday and was immediately given medical attention.
Harry was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in August 2021 to replace Yemi Kale as statistician-general of the federation to head the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The deceased was until his appointment Until his appointment, the Director, Corporate Planning and Technical Coordination Department of NBS with almost three decades of statistical experience.
He joined the erstwhile Federal Office of Statistics as Statistician 11 in 1992 and rose to the position of a substantive Director of Statistics in 2019.
He contributed to several reform initiatives including the reform of the then Federal Office of Statistics which was transformed into the current National Bureau of Statistics.
Harry’s other achievements include contributions to reforming Nigeria’s Statistical System which resulted in the creation and establishment of the state bureau of statistics at the sub-national level.
