A resident of Dong Community of Jos, the Plateau State capital, name withheld, has allegedly cut off the left hand of his wife from the wrist because she took N3000 out of his N20,000 savings.
Our correspondent reports that the victim, Hauwa Ibrahim, is said to be pregnant.
The incident, which occurred on Monday in the Tin City, is said to have shocked neighbors, as well as the Plateau State Government, which despatched the Commissioner for Women Affairs, who visited the woman in the hospital.
It was gathered that trouble started when the husband discovered that N3,000 was missing from his N20,000 total savings, which he had entrusted her with and confronted his wife over the shortfall but she could not give him a satisfactory explanation.
His wife’s insistence on her innocence allegedly irked her enraged husband, who went wild and reached for a dagger with which he severed her hand.
A neighbor, who preferred to be anonymous, disclosed that the screaming of the woman attracted their attention to the family’s residence where they took the victim to the hospital for immediate medical attention.
The police command in the state had yet to officially react to the incident, while the suspect’s whereabout was unknown as of the time of filing this report.
Unconfirmed reports, however, say that the suspect is a policeman, who has been arrested, and has confessed to having committed the crime under the influence of alcohol.
