The Police command in Kaduna says it has launched an investigation into an alleged political violence meeting linked to former governor Nasir El-Rufai.
This is contained in a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan.
According to the command, this follows reports of shootings and disruption of public order during a political gathering.
It said that the incident stemmed from a political meeting allegedly convened under the banner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Coalition.
The police claimed that the meeting was held without prior notification to security agencies, despite repeated warnings.
It said preliminary findings showed that thugs and political gangsters attached to the former governor fired gunshots during the meeting, causing panic and chaos in parts of the state.
The police further disclosed that upon inquiry at the ADC secretariat, the party leadership denied knowledge of any such meeting, distancing themselves from El-Rufai’s claims and reaffirming their commitment to the rule of law.
“The Command wishes to state categorically that the investigation is ongoing, and anyone found culpable, regardless of status or position, will face the full weight of the law,” the statement reads in part.
The police also warned hotels, event centres, and other facilities against hosting political gatherings without prior clearance from security agencies, stressing that such venues would be held liable if their spaces were used to fuel violence or disorder.
“All unauthorised gatherings are to be suspended until due process and proper security arrangements are ensured,” the statement added.
The command assured Kaduna residents of its commitment to safeguarding peace and stability across the state while urging political actors to respect existing regulations.
