A retired Major in the Nigerian Army, Pastor Joe Ajayi, has died in kidnappers’ den in Kogi, in spite of his family paying a ransom of N10 million for his rescue.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ajayi, 76, was kidnapped from his residence in Odo-Ape, Kabba-Bunu local government area, on May 21, 2025.
The retired army officer’s remains have been deposited at Kabba Specialist Hospital mortuary, according to a family source.
It was gathered that the kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of N50 million, which the family could not pay. As a result, Major Ajayi’s health deteriorated due to lack of medication.
The kidnappers later reduced the ransom to N10 million after discovering that Ajayi’s condition was critical.
The family, believing he was still alive, quickly agreed to pay the ransom.
After the ransom was paid, the kidnappers directed the family to where they would find Major Ajayi, only to discover his lifeless body.
This tragic incident has raised concerns about the security situation in Kogi State, where kidnapping has become a recurring problem.
The Chairman and Secretary of Bunu Leaders Forum; Prof. Olu Obafemi, and Dr Ade Abanida, respectively, confirmed the incident on Monday in Lokoja, a statement jointly signed by the duo.
The forum expressed their deepest condolences to the family, community, military colleagues, friends, and well-wishers of the late Ajayi.
The forum described Ajayi’s death as “wicked and unjust” and a “stain on the conscience of our nation.”
According to the forum, Ajayi was prominent figure in his community as the former Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (NAN), Kabba/Bunu Chapter.
They commended his life of service, noting that he was a pillar of wisdom and stability in Bunu land and an unwavering voice of integrity and peace.
The forum urged the government to take decisive action to bring an end to the reign of terror that is daily consuming the innocent and honourable citizens of the state.
“The community has been left devastated and outraged by Major Ajayi’s brutal murder.
“We have vowed to honour his memory not only with tears but with action, unity, and a renewed resolve to defend their people and restore their values.
“May his noble soul rest in peace, and may God comfort his family, friends, and all those who knew him,” the forum said. (NAN)
