Another wave of terror has rocked Niger’s Dosso region, as gunmen launched a deadly attack killing an Indian national, abducting another, and leaving a third missing.
A local security guard was also fatally shot in the ambush.
“WE ARE WORKING CLOSELY WITH NIGERIEN AUTHORITIES AND THE VICTIM’S EMPLOYER TO REPATRIATE THE DECEASED AND SECURE THE RELEASE OF THE KIDNAPPED NATIONAL.”
According to 9jafrenchradio.com, frantic efforts are underway to locate the missing Indian and ensure the safe return of the kidnapped victim.
The Embassy warned its nationals to “exercise the utmost caution” and avoid high-risk areas, particularly regions bordering Mali, where extremist groups remain active.
This latest tragedy comes just three months after five Indian workers were kidnapped in Tillabéri, near the Mali border, during an ambush that left 12 Nigerien soldiers dead.
Analysts say the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) is likely behind both attacks.
Security experts fear that foreign workers are increasingly becoming soft targets in Niger’s worsening security climate.
The fate of the third Indian national remains unknown as the search intensifies.
As of press time, Nigerien authorities had not issued an official statement, but sources say investigations are ongoing.
With anxiety mounting, Indian authorities are pushing for stronger security guarantees for their citizens working in conflict-prone zones.
